Design and Technology - the practical choice
Design and Technology is an area of specialist education in which students are given the opportunity to take part in a number of exciting and rewarding practical activities. The subjects develop the beginnings of a formalised approach to design.
All subjects provide boys and girls with knowledge and skills that can be used in their future careers and in pursuit of recreational activities. Students intending to continue study in Year 11 and 12 can develop their early interest in practical and design skills through study of DESIGN and TECHNOLOGY subjects. The facilities at our school are among the best in the West Coast education district.
DESIGN TECHNICAL GRAPHICS (Semesters 1 & 2)
Technical Graphics is for students interested in developing skills in the areas of Architecture, Engineering and Technical Illustration. This subject introduces students to basic techniques such as linework and finish for pen and pencil, projection and Computer Aided Drawing (CAD). These outcomes are achieved through a series of graphics projects in Pictorial (Perspective, Oblique and Isometric), Architectural, Engineering and Orthographic drawings.
WOOD TECHNOLOGY (Semesters 1 & 2)
In this subject students develop and expand their process skills and knowledge in woodwork, and consolidate hand skills. This is an essential subject where design methods and projects are introduced in preparation for later subjects. Students will also be able to use their own design ideas to individualise their work. This subject will also give students the skills to start evaluating their own work, in order to improve their problem solving techniques.
METALS TECHNOLOGY (Semesters 1 & 2)
In this subject students develop competence in the use of a range of metalworking hand tools, safe work procedures with power tools and associated equipment, and the reading of simple workshop drawings. New skills and processes introduced include sheet metalwork, benchwork, threading, planishing, the use of the oxy-acetylene equipment, and turning on a metal lathe. Students use a wide range of specialised metalworking handtools and equipment.
JEWELLERY (Semesters 1 & 2)
Students are introduced to jewellery techniques and methods incorporating the use of sterling silver, copper, brass, wood, acrylic and simple designs for the creation of modern and traditional jewellery. Silver soldering, peining, etching, carving, twisting and bending are some of the fundamental techniques incorporated in the course which is popular with both girls and boys.
DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHY (Semesters 1 & 2)
Photography is a specialist subject and students are introduced to the camera skills and techniques used in good photography. The course has a very high practical content and students are introduced to ‘Challenges’. Students work in the classroom, darkroom and school grounds to produce photographs that are creative and interesting.
Students are introduced to darkroom printing and learn about composition and folio presentation. Student work is often displayed at school in exhibitions and in publications such as the school magazines and the year book. In addition, students may enter their work in competitions often for personal and community recognition and cash prizes. The photography room is also equipped with digital computer technologies and cameras and uses Adobe Photoshop to experiment with digital imaging. The opportunity exists for students to experiment with professional equipment for assignments such as fashion shoots, specialist portraits and landscapes.

This is done in the contexts of food and health, food cuisines and cultures and textiles and fashion.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY
The Foods course offers students the opportunity to creatively prepare and present a wide variety of foods. They will have the chance to develop their practical food preparation skills whilst using a range of ingredients and equipment. Students will be able to investigate different production techniques, while demonstrating self-expression and creativity in the making of simple meals. Students will complete a program that includes applying the Technology Process to develop their own food products based on their knowledge of ingredients and nutritional requirements.
Textiles Technology
In the Textiles course the students will explore, create and make their own designs for a fashionable item using a variety of colours, fabrics and textures, and craft techniques such as embroidery, appliqué, quilting or beading. Further opportunities will be available for creativity with textiles for personal garments. Students will construct fashionable garments using the Technology Process and up-to-date techniques that save time and energy.
Personal Management
As the pace of life gets faster and the cost of entertaining ourselves increases, the need to make better economical use of our leisure time become more important.
